Exploring Biological Specimens with Computed Tomography

California, September 2017: YXLON International, a company of the Swiss tech holding, COMET Group, has partnered with the California Academy of Sciences.  At the end of July, YXLON lent one of their state-of-the-art computed tomography (CT) systems to the facility. The YXLON FF20 CT system will be in use at the institute until January 31st, 2018 giving interesting insights into various organisms and biological specimens.
The non-destructive nature of CT imaging technology allows for a 3 dimensional look into a myriad of industrial, biological, and historical samples and artifacts.  The FF20 CT is a compact industrial CT system that is helping scientists uncover critical information about how the some 46 million specimens housed at the institute function and interrelate in nature.

The academy has already used the FF20 CT to produce stunning images of a variety of biological specimens and explore the natural world around us.

These are CT images of a Nebria eschscholtzi, a beetle native to California and the American west. They will use images like these to study different aspects of how the insect’s organs function. The internal structure highlighted in red is the kidney.
